New Podcast Interview!
I’m overdue in hyping a recent appearance on Glass Houses: A Billy Joel Podcast, the creators of which were gracious enough to feature me in one of their “Side Quest” episodes covering topics tangentially related to Joel’s career. The connection, as it was explained to me, is that Joel’s favorite movie is The Godfather (1972), and that Joel has occasionally talked about integrating ’70s-movie aesthetics to his videos; moreover, the ’70s was the time period when Joel became a superstar, so the decade’s cinema was part of the cultural backdrop for his ascent. I enjoyed this lengthy conversation with host Jack Firneno, who is not only a Joel superfan (obviously) and a working musician but also an enthusiastic and thoughtful cinephile. We get into a number of interesting topics, from distribution patterns to what made the New Hollywood so interesting to how analogies can be found between Joel’s meticulous songwriting and the craft required to deliver memorable cinematic experiences. Added bonus: I use the words strata and tertiary way too much, so feel free to heckle while you’re listening. Anyway, thanks again to Jack and the Glass Houses team for featuring me, and here’s a link for the show:
